About Swords and Spindles

Want to turn back time? Our brand of history is entertaining, informative and unforgettable. Our costumed characters bring the past to life with interactive presentations, using appropriate artefacts. Once you have been hung drawn and quartered, tried as a witch, had an historical make-over, or been treated for constipation by our barber surgeon, your view of history will never be the same. We pride ourselves on conveying accurate historical information, whilst making it fun and memorable. Good history does not have to be boring; we make sure that education and enjoyment go hand in hand.

We work with history groups, historic sites, family history societies, U3As, social clubs and anyone else who would like to experience our unique performances. We provide living-history for all occasions. Audience participation is key to what we do. We also act as consultants to film-makers and historical novelists. We regret that we are no longer providing sessions for schools.

Our focus is on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, so whether you are holding a Tudor event at a tourist attraction, or wanting a presentation about life during the English Civil War, we can help.

Although we are based in the south-west of England, we do travel further afield and our presenters have spoken in all parts of the country, overseas and at sea. Our competitive fees are based on the number of characters required, the length of the presentation and the distance from our North Devon base. Please contact us to discuss your requirements. We use twenty-first century methods of getting in touch so, for more information, please email swordsandspindles@outlook.com or use the box below. We aim to respond within 48 hours. If you do not receive a reply please try again, or revert to carrier pigeon.

  1. Love what you all are doing here. Do you offer any kind of online option? I thought that with covid you may have some sort of online program now..?

    • Our speciality is being interactive and providing a hands-on experience for the audience so it is difficult to replicate that online. We can provide online talks about various aspects of sixteenth and seventeenth century life but amputating a leg or hanging, drawing and quartering someone virtually isn’t quite the same 🙂
